Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

What is PRC?

A psychosocial recovery coach is a professional who supports individuals with psychosocial disabilities in recognising, reflecting, and taking responsibility for their own recovery journey. They work collaboratively with individuals, their families, carers, and other services to design and implement a personalised recovery plan. This includes helping to coordinate other NDIS supports to ensure comprehensive and cohesive care. Individuals have the option to choose a recovery coach with either learned or lived experience of psychosocial disability, providing a unique and empathetic perspective to the support process.

What Does a Recovery Coach Do?

Recovery coaches play a multifaceted role in supporting individuals with psychosocial disabilities:

  • Develop a Recovery-Enabling Relationship: Establishing a strong, trust-based relationship that fosters an environment conducive to recovery.
  • Increase Awareness of Choice and Control: Empowering individuals by enhancing their understanding of the choices available to them and helping them take control of their recovery journey.
  • Identify Goals and Develop Strategies: Collaboratively setting personal goals and crafting practical strategies to achieve them, ensuring the individual’s aspirations are at the forefront of the recovery plan.
  • Provide Ongoing Support and Engagement: Offering consistent support, especially during times of increased need due to fluctuations in mental health, to ensure individuals remain engaged and motivated in their recovery.
  • Build Capacity and Resilience: Fostering the development of recovery skills, resilience, and decision-making abilities, enabling individuals to manage their mental health more effectively and independently over time.

How is it Different from a Support Coordinator?

While both roles aim to support individuals in maximising the benefits of their NDIS plans, there are key differences:

  • Focus and Scope: Support coordinators primarily focus on capacity building and assisting individuals in navigating and optimising their NDIS plans without the need for a specific diagnosis. Their role is broad, encompassing various disabilities and support needs.
  • Specialisation and Approach: Psychosocial recovery coaches specialise in supporting individuals with a primary diagnosis of psychosocial disability. They adopt a more hands-on approach, leveraging their specialised knowledge of mental health services to provide tailored support. This includes not only managing NDIS supports but also addressing the unique challenges and needs associated with psychosocial disabilities.
  • Depth of Engagement: Recovery coaches engage more deeply with individuals, offering personalised support that extends beyond administrative assistance. Their work involves building meaningful relationships, fostering empowerment, and actively participating in the individual’s recovery journey.

Benefits of Working with a Psychosocial Recovery Coach
